ACHILLES

Have dating apps hijacked modern relationships as we know it?

When the possibility for connection exists on many platforms, can you find a meaningful one IRL?

“Influenced by the likes of Wolfgang Tillmans, these clubby benders capture the nightlife zeitgeist with their multi-media visual theatre dance mash-up.” Simon Casson, Producer for Duckie.

Pierre & Baby present Achilles, a live performance that fuses dance and digital projection, exploring the contemporary struggles and liberations in the human pursuit of love. The duo will transform ‘The Garage’ at Ugly Duck’s Bermondsey venue into an underground cruising spot for their new full-length version of Achilles.

Achilles premiered at The Place for Resolution Festival in 2018 and was brought back for The Place’s first ever Resolution Replay and has gone on to be programmed by venues that include the V&A, the Wellcome Collection and queer performance spaces like the Royal Vauxhall Tavern and The Chateau.

“Ugly Duck is proud to announce that we received more than 50 projects and proposals from artists, curators and activists following our recent open call for the upcoming season: In Transition. With the help of our guest curators Anna Dumitrui (Artist), Tamsin Ace (Head of Public Programming at Southbank Centre) and Layla Reynolds (Illustrator and Art Director at Gal-Dem), we have selected 30+ projects to be presented at our venues from February to July 2019. The projects range from compete building takeovers to individual pieces chosen to participate in a showcase event by Ugly Duck.”

Ugly Duck works with artists to create amazing events in unusual, underused spaces.

Performance begins at 7:30pm with the bar open from 6:30 and a DJ set from Flora Ocean Parkin following the performance who mixed the soundtrack for the piece.

This summer through residencies at The Place for Choreodrome and Wellcome Collection, Pierre & Baby have extended and re-worked Achilles, collaborating with motion graphics designer Kieran Finch, who edited the original projection shot by Hilow Films, musician Flora Ocean Parkin and dramaturg Martin Hargreaves.

This project is commissioned by The Place and supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

Our Collaborators

DIGITAL PROJECTION - Kieran Finch

MUSIC - Flora Ocean Parkin

Flora is a percussionist, DJ and event producer that has placed polyrhythm, experimentalism, and the social affect of musical experience as the driving forces of their practice. Flora now works on the Friday Late programme at the V&A Museum, as Office Manager in the Design, Architecture & Digital Department. As a DJ, Flora uses her queer femme moniker 'fruit boi' to explore queer identity, rhythmic rudeness, and trans-existence.

DRAMATURG - Martin Hargreaves

Martin Hargreaves is a dramaturg, writer, and performer and his research practices range between boredom and hysteria. His primary interests are in the recent history of contemporary dance, queer performance arts, and camp misunderstandings. In 2003 he was awarded a PhD for his thesis entitled Performativity, Spectrality, Hysteria and from 2003 to 2013 he was the Editor of Dance Theatre Journal. From 2005 to 2015 Martin was Programme Leader of the MA The Body in Performance at Trinity Laban. He has worked recently with Pablo Bronstein, Boris Charmatz, Nicola Conibere, Joan Jonas and Yvonne Rainer. He is a Guest Dramaturg at South East Dance’s Dramaturg in Residence programme, supported by Jerwood Charitable Foundation, and was a Lecturer in Fine Art at Goldsmiths, University of London and a Visiting Lecturer in Performative Practices at DOCH, Stockholm before taking up the post of Director of Undergraduate Programmes at London Contemporary Dance School.

BOTW presents: Holiday Sidewinder + Saint Torrente, RPG, Ash Kenazi

MOTH CLUB

Valette Street

9th September 2019

Back up dancing for Holiday Sidewinder -

"Glam-Pop Powerhouse, Holiday Sidewinder, has been dubbed the next pop provocateur following an exhilarating collection of singles, including “unapologetic thot bop” (Huffington Post) Leo -a soaring celebration of sexual liberation inviting “undeniable comparisons to Madonna” (Purple Sneakers). From the “cocky, glossy blur of pure hedonistic glam” (Rolling Stone) we heard with Casino to power-pop anthems like Whispers and Tra$h Can Luv, her debut album Forever or Whatever is set to be a classic.

Hailed as a global pop sensation, Sidewinder is taking the world by storm with her electrifying live show and contagious energy. A femme-fatale at the helm of her own luxury wheels, Holiday is in charge of every aspect of her persona and has funded her album entirely by selling worn satin panties from her personal collection… and like, wow."
